- Minix can work out well on a hard disk, but there are caveats:
-
- 1. support for booting Minix from a hard disk is not part of the current
- distribution, you have to add it. I use something called MXBoot, which
- puts the Minix system into a file in the Minix directory and allows you
- to bring up a menu of possible partitions to boot from if you press a
- key while booting. If you don't press the key the default partition (in
- my case MSDOS) boots normally. I also have OS-2 in the dual boot mode on
- my system, and all three OSs coexist OK.
-
- 2. Minix support for hard disk backups is weak. I have a Colorado Memory
- Systems tape backup, but no way to use it with Minix except for
- transferring files from Minix to DOS. Otherwise you can copy Minix files
- or directories to Minix floppy disks, but this is pretty unwieldy as the
- Minix partition fills up.
-
- 3. Minix isn't smart about different disk formats, either hard or
- floppy. You have to find a boot version that works for you. The Minix
- utility to read and write DOS files is also tricky. I still haven't
- got mine working properly with my DOS hard drive partitions, although
- it works OK with floppies.
