- While there are advantages to the Mach 3.0 distribution from CMU
- mentioned above, the mt Xinu version of Mach is perfectly fine. I use
- it and I like it. They have good support and have been very responsive
- to my problems, ranging from my mouse to reconfiguring my kernel for
- six SCSI disk drives and a SCSI tape drive. Their autosupport
- mechanism is very nice and allows easy & quick updates of kernels,
- utilities, documentation, and so on. I am not sure why someone would
- object that the Xinu release is not "quality work" -- obviously the
- quality of their release derives from that of the CMU work it is based
- on, with additional packaging, bug-fixes, device driver and
- installation support, etc., by mt Xinu. And, as I have said, I have
- had good experiences with it.
-
- Unfortunately, it is now difficult to get a stand-alone Mach 3.0 system
- *that runs unix* from CMU due to the legal battles being waged between USL,
- BSDI and UC Berkeley. I am told that CMU has suspended distribution of
- the net2-based BNR2SS server, at least for the time being. You can get
- the stand-alone Mach system without a Unix server, of course; and if you
- have a Unix license you can still get the BSD server or the BNR2SS server.
- You can't get Mach2.5 from CMU without a UNIX license.
-
- Some of my biases: I have been a kernel engineer for many years so my
- viewpoint may be different from that of an end-user; I consult to mt
- Xinu; I consult to the Open Software Foundation Research Institute,
- where I work on Mach 3.0; and I have contributed to and worked with
- OSF/1 and Mach 2.0/2.5 for several years.
