- After watching the progress of Linux for some time, I decided to
- take the plunge. I cleared off my 200meg hard drive to dedicate it
- to Linux, downloaded the MCC-0.97p2 files, and had at it. It works
- amazingly well! My compliments to all who contributed to the project
- thus far.
-
- How for the obligatory newbie questions:
-
- 1. I now plan to snarf GNU Emacs and X11R5. What's the best way to
- do that? Download to DOS and use mtools to move it over? (I've read
- about mtools but haven't a clue if it'll do that.) Should I get the
- Unix sz/rz package (kermit strikes me as too slow)?
-
- 2. How should I partition my hard drive? At the moment I have 4
- partitions: / - 32m, /usr - 32m, /home - 32m, /usr/src - 64m. I'm
- perfectly willing to throw away my current setup and start over with
- a better partitioning.
-
- 3. When I fired up Kermit under Linux, it thinks that the port DOS
- considered COM2 is /dev/ttys1. How come? Also, I notice that the DTE
- speed is limited to 38.4. How come?
-
- 4. I have a Colorado Jumbo tape drive. Any plans to add a device
- driver for it or is CMS one of those greedy companies who'll be
- happy to sell us one?
-
- 5. In the same vein, what's the best way to do backups?
-
- 6. Is there an easy fix to the AT keyboard braindamage of the
- control and CAPSlock keys? I've used a little TSR in DOS-land, Can I
- hack the Linux kbd driver to switch them?
-
- One last humerous note. I've been a faithful Emacs hack since my
- days on Tenex and have always used ed (yes - ed) when I needed to
- hack in single user mode. Yikes! No ed on linux. I had to stumble
- around using that THING called vi which up to now i've avoided like
- the plague. Oh well, all you vi-ers can chalk one up. But hey! We
- still eat our desserts first! ;-)
