- Hello, I have just sucked out linux from a ftp site, and have
- succesfully installed it. But I have some questions which I can't seem
- to find answers for in the doco.
-
- (1) I sucked out a editor (which runs fine), the execuatble of
- which sits in /usr/local/bin. How can I set it up, so that to all users
- this appears ni their path. Do I edit rc? I tried doing that, but it
- didn't seem to work.
-
- (2) in the installation, one of the things it explains is to
- get a compressed tar to linux, rawrite this tar to disk and then, boot linux, and use
- tar -zxf. Probldem is, tar doesn't seem to know about the flag 'z'????
- Igot the 0.97 images from tsx, so I assume I would have the latest version.
- Do I have to install another tar, which handles compressed tar files or
- something?
-
- (3) I have had some probs installing the compiler. Question: Am I
- meant to get compiler tar files, and untar them from the /usr subdir?
- then go into the install directory, and run the install script? I tried
- this, but then it said, somethine like, where are the tar.Z files?
-
- (4) Also, my reading of the doco: Is it the case that I need the
- kernel source to install the compiler? Why?
-
- Wouldn't it e easier to say, have 2 sets of diskimages floating
- around the sites. One with the compiler ALREADY installed, and one without.
- The basic system that you install doesn't seem to have a editor on it?
- (Well I couldn't find one). I suggest, if there really isn't a editor
- on it, then it would be nice to provide one on the images. I got down
- a editor (I think it was called "joe") which is quite small, and easy
- to use. Just something to help people edit their files, and so things,
- till they decide which editor they would prefer to use in the long run.
