  11.    Hi! I'm now looking at 486 systems, and want some input. I will want to
  12. exclusively run linux on it. Right now, the budget seems to be in the $2000
  13. to $3000 range (hopefully closer to $2000).

  15.    The company that I'm interested in is Insight Computers, although I'm
  16. willing to put together my own system, buy from anyone, etc., as long as I
  17. can get some good recommendations.

  19.    My main software applications will probably be GNU emacs, TeX, X,
  20. Gnuplot, and GCC. Also, I have a 286 I would like to connect via a
  21. serial-serial port cable, so that I can have two users on at the same time.
  22. This seems possible in linux (text mode only, that it). (Various games,
  23. too, of course.) My questions are intentionally vague, as I want as much
  24. input as I can get.

  26. 1) How important will a good processor be? Should I forget about a 486 and
  27. get a 386-40, and put the money elsewhere? (Although a numeric coprocessor
  28. seems helpful for some things I'd like to do.) I think I will either get a
  29. 486-33DX or a 486-50DX (no DX2's.) Is this a good choice? Should I pay more
  30. for the '50?

  32. 2) Memory. More is better, of course, but would 8 megs be sufficent to,
  33. say, run X and two copies of emacs and TeX w/o too much swapping?

  35. 3) Disk drive & tape drive. I'd like a disk drive in the 200 meg area, SCSI
  36. hopefully. What adapters should I look at? I'd also like a SCSI tape drive
  37. in the 200 meg range (or 150 w/ data compression). Suggestions? Problems?

  40. 4) Video card. Would the card Insight supplies, a DSS 24-bit card (ET4000
  41. chipset), be sufficient for my needs?

  43. 5) If I managed to have lots o' money left over, I'd like a 17-inch
  44. monitor. How useful is this for X?

  46.    Should I just get a 386-40, as I said above, and get the best components
  47. I can, or will a faster CPU help much? I have a feeling RAM makes a bigger
  48. impact on system performance, as in OS/2, but I'd like to be sure.
  49. (Especially since I wouldn't be the only user of this system.)
