- I have a port of ka9q working. It includes ftp as well as telnet, telunix,
- ping and a sizable number of other protocols. It is not finished yet, however.
- The documentation is mostly missing, so I'm writing it anew. The program
- has a bug that will not allow it to run as a daemon, I have not connected
- the smtp (mail) system to Coh's mail and the domain service is not yet working,
- so you must use the internet number addresses. It is going to take me a
- while to fix these problems. However, if you just want ftp and telnet
- in either server or user modes, or a telunix server, the program will
- now fullfill those roles.
-
- As you may know, ka9q was originated to provide network service on
- ms-dos machines for amateur radio operators. It is a publically
- distributable freeware program created by Phil Karn and many
- other volutneers. One of the major problems with porting ka9q
- has been it's single user ms-dos basis. The sys5 port that I
- began with still had a terrible cpu consumption. This is now fixed
- with some of the new feature of the Coh. 4.0 system. I believe
- that ka9q will perform much better on Coh 4.0 than it does on
- sys5.
-
- Telunix is a telnet server that allows incoming telnet sessions to
- login to your machine, or run some other program of your choosing such
- as a bbs or database server.
-
- I have not tried the protocols that are specific to amateur radio,
- and I will be unable to do so because I am not a radio operator. The
- only device I have tried with ka9q is the SLIP interface over com1l
- and com1r. When I get a '386 device driver kit, I'll fix the program
- to provide tcp-ip over arcnet becuase I already have the hardware.
- If someone will produce an ethernet driver, ka9q can interface
- with that.
-
- The program includes ax.25 and netrom protocols. However, there
- is no provision for nntp (news) services, or nameserver and many
- other common internet protocols, but these can be added.
-
- There are provisions for ethernet devices and for gateway services,
- tftp and bootp for remote booting. Since the program includes source
- code, you could add almost any features you are willing to develop.
-
- At any rate, If you are interested in tcpip for Coherent, why not
- subscribe to the coherent tcp-ip mailing list. New Zealander, Don
- Stokes, got the Victoria University at Wellingdon interested in
- backing up an effort to get tcpip happening for Coh. This is a
- volunteer effort, separate from MWC. The list receives articles
- at: coherent-tcpip@comp.vuw.ac.nz . Send a message to the server
- with the word help as the body in order to find out how to subscribe.
- The address of the server is:
- 130.195.5.20
- listserv@comp.vuw.ac.nz
-
- You can also e-mail me at either of my addresses if you wish
- more information on this port of ka9q. This port is not yet
- available on any sites. I had intended to wait until it is
- more completely ported. But, if there is a lot of interest,
- perhaps we can get a development edition out to expedite things.
