  23. Peter, you're missing my point ... and probably Chris's, as well.

  25. Chris was reminding me that, like him, I've been a victim of unfair
  26. harrassment, albeit for different reasons.  (It's slightly off topic and
  27. old news, but remind me some time to tell you the MagickNet/Tex Burke
  28. story, the one he was referring to.)  He thought it would make me
  29. sympathize with him, and asked me what I would do if the people harrassing
  30. me had been a small "freelance" group of nuts instead of police officers
  31. and reporters.

  33. I told the story I did to show Chris that in addition to police officers
  34. and the media harrassing me, there were small freelance groups of nuts
  35. harrassing me, so my situation in the late '80s is more closely analogous
  36. to his situation than he thought.

  38. But Pagans in the late 80s and hackers/phreaks in the early 90s do have
  39. something in common, though: a lot of unfounded hysteria among the public,
  40. fed mostly by ignorance and bad news reporting, is whipping government in
  41. general and law enforcement in particular to trample the Constitution
  42. underfoot.  As a result, I think it would behoove current and former
  43. hackers and phreaks to behave in a way that doesn't pour gasoline on a
  44. raging fire.  And when there's a McCarthy-style witch-hunt going on, it is
  45. just not right to cooperate with it just to punish people you don't like.
