  28. The following program will be broadcast on many PBS stations in October. 
  29. Please check with your local PBS station Education Services Director to see

  32. TELECOMMUNICATIONS: BRINGING THE WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM, a professional 
  33. development videoconference for educators and school boards will be 
  34. presented on October 22, 1992, from 2:00-4:00 PM Eastern Time by the 
  35. National School Boards Association's Institute for the Transfer of 
  36. Technology to Education, the PBS Elementary/Secondary Service and The 
  37. National Foundation for the Improvement of Education.  The videoconference 
  38. will originate from INFOMART, Dallas, TX, site of the annual "Making 
  39. Schools More Productive" NSBA conference.  This live, interactive 
  40. videoconference will investigate issues in telecommunications use in 
  41. schools from a variety of perspectives-- from policymaker to practitioner.
  42.  
  43. The videoconference will feature NFIE's 1992 award-winning Christa 
  44. McAuliffe Educators -- Bonnie Bracey, Arlington, VA; Misty Brave, Kyle, SD; 
  45. Carol Gilkinson, Covina, CA; Marilyn Schlief, Garden City, MI; Jim 
  46. Zimmerman, Urbana, IL -- who employ some of the most innovative 
  47. applications of technology in schools today, such as:
  48.  
  49. *Connecting Students from Around the Globe Via Lumaphones and 
  50. slow-Scan-Video: Voice and picture messages are carried over telephone 
  51. lines from Michigan to Japan connecting students and teachers in the Garden 
  52. City Public Schools with their Japanese contemporaries.
  53.  
  54. *Teaching About Cultures Close to Home: Technology is being integrated into 
  55. multicultural curriculum programs in Little Wound School in South Dakota to 
  56. educate and instill value of traditional native American customs.
  57.  
  58. *Achieving Real Life Studies of Our Earth: Students in Arlington, Virginia 
  59. are taking part in the National Geographic Kids Network to share current 
  60. information in an international telecommunications-based science and 
  61. geography curriculum studying acid rain.
  62.  
  63. *Opening Up the World of Science: Students are utilizing a variety of  
  64. technological tools including computers, video disc, scanners, 
  65. telecommunications, and robotics to complete classroom assignments and 
  66. discover the world of science.

  68. *Creating a Global Perspective, Community, and  Classroom: Students in 
  69. Covina, California are being introduced to Prodigy and E-mail and other  
  70. educational technology to engage students in collaborative efforts to 
  71. examine worldwide problems, increase cultural awareness, and promote a 
  72. global perspective.

  74. By offering this videoconference, educators in your area will learn how 
  75. (and be able to ask questions of) these motivated, innovative teachers are 
  76. applying telecommunications-based programs in new and exciting ways. Their 
  77. insights and experiences will prove invaluable to educators who are 
  78. striving to change education.

  91. DESCRIPTION    :   The videoconference will examine issues in 
  92.                     telecommunications use in schools from a variety of 
  93.                     perspectives - from policymaker to practitioner.  The 
  94.                     1992 NFIE Christa McAuliffe Educators will demonstrate 
  95.                     projects currently in place in their respective 
  96.                     districts and help participants explore the challenges 
  97.                     and opportunities presented in implementing 
  98.                     telecommunications-based programs in today's 
  99.                     classrooms.  Telecommunications issues for schools, 
  100.                     including planning and policy issues, governance, 
  101.                     curricular issues, technical requirements, and 
  102.                     financial impact will be addressed.

  104.                 Association's Institute for the Transfer of 
  105.                 Technology to Education, with support from 
  106.                 the Regional Bell Operating Companies

  110. COST           :    $150 per downlink site.  This is a 
  111.                 non-exclusive offering.

  115.                 sites registered through PBS.

  121. HOW TO ACCESS THIS PROGRAM

  124. Step 1:  Contact your local PBS station Education Services director to 
  125. find out if this program will be available through your local station.
  126.  
  127. Step 2:  If this program is unavailable through your PBS station, your 
  128. organization may license it for C-band downlink.  Simply mark "NSBA 
  129. Videoconference Event" on the Interest Form Below to obtain more 
  130. information, including a registration form.  The program may be licensed 
  131. for $150 per downlink site, including recording and site duplication 
  132. rights for one year from the date of broadcast plus a guidebook which may 
  133. be reproduced.  Copies of the program may be retained for the 
  134. life-of-tape!  The broadcast will occur on regular C-band satellite.

  136. Cooperative arrangements with your local PBS station are encouraged! 
  137. Cooperating with a nearby educational organization is one way to share 
  138. costs.  The PBS Elementary/Secondary Service maintains an active roster 
  139. of all parties interested in licensing this program and will gladly help

  144. dedicated to serving the instructional needs of students and teachers
