  15. Fellow netters,
  16. Mail from my home site arrives at its destination bearing
  17. an extra header item of the form:

  19. Return-Path: <myuname!user>
  20.  
  21. This line doesn't do anybody any good,
  22. and causes some destinations or intermediate sites to bounce my mail
  23. with various "protocol errors."
  24. My local mail expert tells me the Return-Path item is illegal and
  25. shouldn't appear in my mail at all while it is traveling.
  26. When I mail from my home to here at work,
  27. the extra line appears in the middle of the header, between the "Received by"
  28. from my uucp neighbor and the "Received: from" by the gateway machine here.

  30. My uucp-mail neighbor first explained I am using a "dumb" uucp
  31. and I should get a "smart" one,
  32. and then they said they are still "investigating."
  33. I have examined my outgoing messages in
  34. /usr/spool/uucp and there's no Return-Path: line in them.
  35. I found no mention of dumb nor smart in the Nutshell Guide
  36. _Managing UUCP and Usenet_.

  38. My site is an AT-compatible running SCO System V/386 3.2.0.
  39. It's got a domain name registered with the NIC.
  40. It looks to me like AT&T SVR3.2 HDuucp, mailx, and mmdf.
  41. I dial my neighbor up on an ordinary 2400 bps Hayes-compatible.
  42. I don't know anything useful (in this context) about SunOS.

  44. My neighbor (whose name I'd prefer not be mentioned here) is a cluster
  45. of Suns running a stock SunOS.
  46. They don't know anything useful about SCO, AT&T, or mmdf.
