- Then again (as I'm sure you know, but perhaps not all readers do),
- RFC1123 overrides the 24-character rule (as well as the subsequent one
- in RFC952 that says that the first character must be an alpha):
-
- Host software MUST handle host names of up to 63 characters and
- SHOULD handle host names of up to 255 characters.
-
- Our IBM mailers ("running IBM VM SMTP V2R1") also enforces the "no '_'"
- rule, as well as the unchanged-from-952 "last character must not be
- '-'" rule, and have no problems with leading digits - I haven't tried
- what the maximum length allowed is, but it's certainly more than 63.
-
- Seems those IBM guys really go by the letter of the RFCs - and I
- certainly don't think there's anything wrong with that, although I
- suspect most people are, like the original poster, unaware that '_'
- isn't allowed - your list has plenty of evidence for that too...
