- The number of vendors, and the total size of the exhibit floor was
- down substantially from recent years, especially if the Showcase area
- is not counted. Vendors pay big bucks for floor space with high
- traffic in their target market, resulting in conference profits. But
- SIGGRAPH's income can't help but be down from this aspect of the
- conference, relative to other years with more vendors on the floor.
- Whatever happened to Genisco, RamTek, Megatek, Adage, etc, etc, etc,....?
-
- I've never been an EC member, but I've been to every SIGGRAPH since
- 1978, and know some of those folks. (IMHO) The reason for the big trade show
- floor is BECAUSE it brings in bucks. The reason it is so glitzy is
- that the companies are competing for the attention of the attendees,
- and that competition has to be eye-catching.
-
- I prefer the SIGGRAPH show floor to other similar shows because
- vendors who have been more than once know that there will be some
- folks wandering through who will be able to figure out much about
- their product by watching demos, and then will ask hard questions. So
- they bring technical people as well as sales droids. (Sales droids
- often get uncomfortable when someone in their audience knows more
- about the product than they do, and is willing to tell all, or ask
- embarrassing questions.)
-
- Yes it is a circus, but it is our circus. It is more overwhelming to
- someone new and from outside the community. The most important part
- to me is the chance to interact directly with people I would otherwise
- only call or email. It is big enough now that I never get to spend
- enough time with all the people I'd like to. On the other hand, I always
- meet new, interesting people too.
-
- The motivation for new conferences is (IMHO) (1) to get a smaller, more
- focussed group, with a chance to talk with most of the folks present,
- (2) to get more good research presented to the community (acceptance
- at SIGGRAPH being in the 1 out of 5 or 6 range means at least some good
- work doesn't get in, and our journals seem to be excruciatingly slow)
- and the attendant credit to the researchers for doing the work.
-
- As long as the new conferences are self-sustaining, I see no reason
- not to create them. There is some risk, and one role for SIGGRAPH is
- to assume some of this risk, while adding expertise to minimize it.
