- Could this have something to do with the quality of the courses and/or
- paper/panel sessions? While I didn't attend this year (as a
- participant in Showcase I had to be on this end to manage the control
- of the electron microscope and be on hand in case anything broke), my
- collegues who did attend did indicate that they felt that the overall
- technical quality of the program was down from years past. Of course,
- your mileage may vary.
-
- Again, I'm a little concerned with the tendency of SIGGRAPH to go
- overboard on the showbiz aspects of things, perhaps to the
- detriment of the technical/academic side of the program. (By
- "showbiz," I don't mean the entertainment industry, which has indeed
- contributed greatly to the advancement of the art and science of
- computer graphics) but the gee-whizzery and out-and-out hype that
- seems to surround the Conference.)
-
- An example: As I mentioned above, my lab was a collaborator with the
- San Diego Supercomputer Center and The Scripps Research Institute in a
- SIGGRAPH Showcase project (The Distributed Laboratory --
- Electron-telemicroscopy -- it was written up in June CACM if you want
- details). In one memo we received from the Showcase management we
- were exorted "to put on a good show" (my paraphrase but I believe
- accurate in substance) and not treat Showcase as a poster session
- because we were "competing" with the hoo-hah of the manufacturer's
- exhibits. In my opinion, this was an example of the "style over
- substance" mentality that seems to be prevalent among the SIGGRAPH
- Conference management. My boss, who was a panelist and did attend,
- expressed a great deal of surprise at the circus-like atmosphere,
- particularly in comparison with the academic conferences that he
- normally attends.
-
- [The above, of course, is my personal opinion and not that of the San
- Diego Microscopy and Imaging Resource, the University of California,
- the San Diego Supercomputer Center, or The Scripps Research Institute,
- should any of those august entities actually even *have* opinions.]
