- 2. INTRODUCTION TO MOTIF (John Wexler and Bob McGonigle)
-
- Wednesday 28 October, at the University of York.
-
- This tutorial is a technical course, based on courseware
- developed at the Computing Services of the University of
- Edinburgh, in conjunction with IXI Ltd of Cambridge. The
- tutorial is aimed at people who will program or port
- applications to use Motif and X, or people who need to know
- how to do that even if they will not be doing it themselves.
- The prerequisites for the course are familiarity with Unix,
- C programming and user experience of a WIMP interface.

-
- The tutorial will introduce the basic Motif concepts, and
- will describe the details of callbacks and resources. Basic
- widgets, such as MainWindow and ScrolledList, and the use of
- PulldownMenus, will be covered. A guide to using the Motif
- documentation will also be given. A practical to illustrate
- these basic concepts will be run. This is the first of two
- Motif tutorials in the Eurographics programme. The second
- tutorial, BEYOND THE MOTIF BASICS, will be held in early
- 1993, and will continue from the first, covering further
- widgets, and mechanisms such as actions and translations.
-
- JOHN WEXLER works at the Edinburgh Regional Computing
- Centre. His special interests are operating systems,

-
- As the UK academic community in general were taking an
- interest in the emerging software for visualisation AGOCG
- provided funding for a Visualisation Support Post over an
- initial period ending in April 1993.
- The aim during this period is to raise the awareness and
- promote the use of visualisation systems throughout the UK.
- The talk will report on the activities which have been
- organised and will outline the forthcoming events for the
- remainder of 1992/3.
- Any suggestions from the audience during the talk for

- 14.20 The Good (Reality), the Bad (Sampled Data Set), and
- the Ugly (Contour Plot) by John Szymanski
-
- UNIRAS offers both the expert and the non-expert user a wide
- range of powerful tools for the manipulation and
- presentation of discrete data sets. Particularly convenient
- for the beginner or non-expert is the fact that the system
- is easy to use and has a set of reasonable defaults
- incorporated to allow the automatic production of displays
- with the minimum of operator intervention. Implicit within
- UNIRAS, however, is the assumption that the data is broadly
- `reasonable' and that the default values will cope with most
- cases that are likely to arise. This paper examines some of
- the dangers facing the non-expert user who supplies UNIRAS
- with a two-dimensional data set of variable sampling density

- and data quality. The particular application area addressed
- is that of archaeological site investigation, where
- particularly `interesting' data sets arise not only from
- topographical studies of the site, but also from geophysical
- methods which probe beneath the surface and provide indirect
- evidence of buried features.
-
- 14.40 Contour Mapping at Sea by Andrew Cormack
-
- RVS supports the NERC fleet of scientific research vessels
- including Sun computer systems carried on the ships. These
- systems are used to collect and archive data from scientific
- and navigational instruments and to provide rapid
- visualisation of the data enabling the scientists on board
- to identify areas of particular interest.

- UNIRAS UK USER GROUP ANNUAL CONFERENCE ...
- Two dimensional line contour plots were first produced
- during the EEC North Sea Project in 1988/9 using the UniMap
- package in a 'batch' mode. These were found to be very
- useful and the system has since been developed to improve
- its speed and facilities. The contouring program now calls
- Uniras library routines to generate line or colour-fill maps
- in two or three dimensions as specified on a series of
- menus. Values for the maps are read directly from the data
- files to which instruments are logged thus allowing contour
- maps to be generated in near real-time.
-
- Contour maps can be generated from any data collected over a
- surface such as a vertical or horizontal plane or, for
- example, a constant temperature surface. Time series data
- can also be presented in the same form. Recent examples
- include surveys of ocean eddies and fronts, plankton blooms,
- river outflows and tidal currents. ... continues

- The theme for the 1992 UUUG Conference Exhibition is
- hardware, with a number of commercial vendors demonstrating
- workstations, X-Terminals and Plotters. The exhibition runs
- parallel with the main session on Wednesday 30th Spetember
- and provides an informal opportunity to discuss and see the
- latest technology with a number of leading graphics vendors.
-
- GENERAL INFORMATION The conference will take place in the
- Social Science building on the Nottingham University campus.
- The accommodation is in the Hugh Stewart hall of residence,

- Third Eurographics Workshop on Object-Oriented Graphics
-
- CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
- Champery, Switzerland, 28-30 October 1992
-
- Aims and Scope:
- At past workshops it has been noted that people in the
- graphics community are addressing a wide variety of
- problems: surface modeling, rendering, animation,
- interaction, multiple media, constraints, etc. At the same
- time, it has also been noted that people share similar
- concerns in the areas of software reuse, extensibility and
- maintenance. This workshop will be an effort to identify
- such common concerns and to devise solutions that benefit a
- wide spectrum of research domains within the interactive
- graphics community. The goal of the workshop is to outline a
- common platform, based on a set of object-oriented

- primitives, for the support of graphics applications. To
- this end, each submission should be motivated by at least
- one of the following questions:
-
- 1. If my programming environment were to provide an
- object-oriented platform, what kind of support would I ask
- from it for my particular domain of interest?
- 2. As a designer of an object-oriented platform, how would
- it support object-oriented graphics?
-
- Here, the term object-oriented platform should be taken in a
- broad sense; it may encompass any kind of functionality to
- support graphics applications, even non-graphic primitives
- such as support for persistent objects, concurrency, etc.
- The following non-exhaustive list provides some typical
- issues that could be discussed:

- Other submitted papers
-
- We also welcome other material which may not be ready or
- appropriate for publication. This is an opportunity to
- describe an application that makes interesting or novel use
- of computer graphics, or to report the early stages of a
- research project. It is only necessary to provide an
- abstract of your paper by the closing date of 1st December
- 1992. We will however encourage you to expand this further
- for publication in the conference proceedings. Each paper
- accepted will entitle the authors(s) to a single person-day
