- EUROGRAPHICS UK Autumn 1992 Tutorial Programme
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- Each year the UK Chapter of EUROGRAPHICS offers a popular programme of
- full-day tutorials covering a range of computer graphics-related topics.
-
- There are 3 tutorials in this year's autumn programme:
-
- 1. "GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS"
- Michael McCullagh and David Ebdon
- Monday 28 September 1992, at the University of Nottingham.
-
- 2. "INTRODUCTION TO MOTIF"
- John Wexler and Bob McGonigle
- Wednesday 28 October, at the University of York.
-
- 3. "COLOUR PERCEPTION, MODELLING AND DISPLAY"
- Lindsay Macdonald
- Friday 20 November 1992, at Cosenor's House, Abingdon, Oxford.
-
- Details of each tutorial are given below.
-
- The fee for each tutorial is 75 pounds for EUROGRAPHICS members, and 90

- 1. GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (Michael McCullagh and David Ebdon)
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The topics covered during the day will be:
-
- - Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), generation, and applications in the GIS world
- - modelling problems using DTMs and derived mapping such as
- slope and aspect data
- - remote sensing imagery, geology, and soil
- - diverse applications as exploration and planning; intervisibility
- models, development and use in planning problems; use of graphic
- information systems on small computers (PC) to display and analyse local
- (crime!) data.
-
- MICHAEL J. MCCULLAGH is Lecturer in Geography, University of Nottingham.
- Is research interests are digital terrain modelling software development,
- GIS, and general quantitative methods. He is the author of the Panacea
- terrain modelling package available on PCs and larger machines.
-
- DAVID S. EBDON is Lecturer in Geography at the same University and author
- of several books on statistics and the use of quantitative methods in
- Geography. His research interests in applications of GIS in a wide variety
- of fields stretching from local police crime records to the distribution of
- dunlin in Scotland, forestry in Buckinghamshire, and people in Spain.
-
- DATE AND VENUE: Monday 28 September 1992, at the University of Nottingham

- 2. INTRODUCTION TO MOTIF (John Wexler and Bob McGonigle)
-
- This tutorial is a technical course, based on courseware developed at the
- Computing Services of the University of Edinburgh, in conjunction with IXI
- Ltd of Cambridge. The tutorial is aimed at people who will program or port
- applications to use Motif and X, or people who need to know how to do that
- even if they will not be doing it themselves. The prerequisites for the
- course are familiarity with Unix, C programming and user experience of a
- WIMP interface.
-
- The tutorial will introduce the basic Motif concepts, and will describe the
- details of callbacks and resources. Basic widgets, such as MainWindow and
- ScrolledList, and the use of PulldownMenus, will be covered. A guide to
- using the Motif documentation will also be given. A practical to
- illustrate these basic concepts will be run. This is the first of two
- Motif tutorials in the Eurographics programme. The second tutorial, BEYOND
- THE MOTIF BASICS, will be held in early 1993, and will continue from the
- first, covering further widgets, and mechanisms such as actions and
- translations.
-
- JOHN WEXLER works at the Edinburgh Regional Computing Centre. His special
- interests are operating systems, concurrent systems, and software
- engineering. His is the author of "Concurrent Programming in occam 2".
-
- DATE AND VENUE: Wednesday 28 October, at the University of York.

- 3. COLOUR PERCEPTION, MODELLING AND DISPLAY (Lindsay Macdonald)
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- This tutorial will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the
- perception and use of colour in computer graphics and imaging applications.
- The morning sessions will provide an overview of how we see, organise and
- model colour, with reference to recent research into colour appearance
- modelling. The afternoon sessions will deal with displays and printing
- processes, with practical techniques for calibration and colour control,
- plus guidelines for making the best use of colour for the presentation of
- information in displays. The tutorial comprises four modules, as follows:
-
- - Light, colour and human vision
- - Colour appearance and modelling
- - Reproduction of colour in display and print
- - Guidelines for using colour effectively in displays
-
- LINDSAY MACDONALD is a Senior Consultant at Crosfield Electronics Ltd., the
- world's leading supplier of electronic pre-press systems for high quality
- reproduction of images in print. His interests lie in colour modelling,
- computer graphics, image processing and user interface design and he is the
- holder of 16 patents in these fields. He was project manager of the
- CARISMA research project in collaboration with Loughborough University,
- supported by the DTI under the IEATP programme. He is also a member of the
- BSI committee shadowing the development of ISO 9241 on the Ergonomics of
- Visual Display Terminals and was invited recently by the EC to serve as a
- technical evaluator for proposals in Esprit III. He is a member of both
- BCS and IEE.
-
- DATE AND VENUE: Friday 20 November 1992, at Cosenor's House, Abingdon, Oxford.
