  17. "V.fast" is the "working title" for the project in CCITT Study Group 
  18. XVII for the next (and probably last) generation of analog modems. 
  19. While a lot of proposals have been put on the table, few decisions 
  20. have been made on how the modem will work -- but one item of 
  21. consensus is that it will run at least 24,000 bps on most domestic 
  22. phone channels, with 28,800 on many (short local loops with all 
  23. digital connections between central offices).

  25. The standard is still far from adoption, so no existing modems "have
  26. this 'standard'"; however, some manufacturers have offered
  27. proprietary non-standard high-speed modems above 14,400 bps, with a
  28. promise to upgrade to "real V.fast" when the standard is done (which
  29. is a tough promise to make, given the current uncertainty about what
  30. will be in the final standard).

  32. I suspect that, at the current pace of work, Study Group XVII won't
  33. reach technical consensus on the standard until fall of 1993, with
  34. adoption of the standard in early 1994 -- but that is very much
  35. subject to change.
