  22. Try more like 1-5%. V.42 *can't* compress files that are already compressed.
  23. Neither can MNP5, but at least V.42 is smart enough to see that it'll be
  24. making the file *bigger*, and quit trying.

  26. GIF and ZIP files are essentially uncompressable. Your modem *certainly*
  27. doesn't have the horsepower to do it. *Never* count on V.42 or MNP making
  28. a significant difference in transmission time.

  30. With a 9600 bps modem and V.42, the highest xfer rate I've seen was 
  31. 12000 bps.
