- The phone company has the right to inspect and reject anything that you
- want to plug into their wires, in case it interferes with the operation of the
- public switched telephone network. If you're mass-producing the things with a
- decent degree of consistency and quality control, they might 'borrow' a number
- of them and approve the model in general.
-
- Also, here in Canada, consumer safety regulations specify that anything
- that will be plugged into a power outlet must be approved. CSA approval
- involves donating some of your doohickeys to the Canadian Standards
- Association and waiting for them to announce their conclusion - or announce
- that they haven't reached one and need more of the things for testing.
-
- One-offs may be inspected in a non-destructive manner by Ontario Hydro for
- a nominal fee (it used to be $50; I don't know what it is now).
-
- Obviously many home-built devices, although legally bound by these
- regulations, have been plugged in to both power and the telephone net without
- inspection and approval. I guess that's not much trouble as long as the
- device does not bring itself to the attention of either utility providor!
