- At Condor Systems (an electronic defense contractor) we have developed
- a technique for using Ethernet to provide fully deterministic isochronous
- communications. This networking system, which we call VersaNet, was
- developed to allow a large collection of our various "black boxes"
- to communicate together using the relatively high bandwidth and
- convenient bus topology of Ethernet. Our black boxes are all real
- time systems which produce and/or consume multiple independent streams
- of time-sensitive data. In addition, we require all network nodes to
- be synchronized to a common network time to within 50 usec.
-
- VersaNet allows us to intermix real time data streams and control/response
- transactions. We are able to dynamically partition the available net bandwidth
- between the various stations as their operational modes require. And, because
- we operate entirely without collisions, we are able to utilize 80 - 90% of the
- total net bandwidth without performance degredations.
-
- After having developed and fielded VersaNet, it occurred to me that there
- might be interest in the commercial world for this technology. I have
- prepared a white paper which describes how VersaNet works and how it
- could be applied to provide solutions in multi-media and real-time
- networking. If anyone is interested, please email a request to me.
- If you want to discuss it on the phone I can be reached at Condor Systems
