- In comp.dcom.lans.ethernet you write:
- >How do I go about cableing together two computers
- >using 10baseT. One will been a Unix file server,
- >the other will be a DOS machine. Is it just
- >UTP with RJ45's wired straight thru or what?

- 10BaseT uses an arrangement like this:
-
- computer <--patch cable -->10BaseT hub<---patch cable---->computer
- |
- |
- patch cable
- |
- |
- computer
-
- Basically lots of computers all attached to a central hub via
- unshielded twisted pair (data-grade).
-
- If you're looking for a cheap way to attach two computers, you can't
- beat 10Base2, otherwise known as thinnet or thin Ethernet. It's like
- this:
-
- computer computer computer computer
- ===|===============|=================|===================|==========
-
- Assuming you need to just telnet and ftp to the Unix box from the PC,
- thinnet is a whole lot cheaper and easier for just a couple of nodes. If
- the nodes are going to be many rooms apart and in greater number, then you
- may want to take the plunge into 10BaseT.
-
- The approximate cost with 10Base2 between your PC and UNIX box,
- assuming the UNIX box already has software and an AUI Ethernet
- interface:
-
- transceiver for UNIX box to attach to thinnet -> 150.00
- AUI cable for use with transceiver ------------> 40.00
- Ethernet card for PC --------------------------> 150.00
- Telnet/FTP/etc... for PC ----------------------> free (many p.d. ver. avail.)
- Cable, connectors -----------------------------> 75.00
- TOTAL? ===========>> 415.00
-
- The approx. cost with 10BaseT between your PC and UNIX box, also assuming
- the UNIX box already has software and an AUI Ethernet interface:
-
- transceiver for UNIX box to attach to 10BaseT -> 150.00 (that's high actually)
- AUI cable -------------------------------------> 40.00
- Ethernet card for PC --------------------------> 150.00
- Telnet/FTP/etc... for PC ----------------------> free (see above)
- Cable, connectors for patch cables ------------> 50.00
- Cheap 12-port 10BaseT concentrator (HUB)-------> 300.00
- TOTAL? ==========>> 690.00
-
- Notes:
- - Actually, there's probably some cheaper 4 or 5 port concentrators
- available for a bit less than 300.
- - Some vendors are coming out with 4 or 5 port concentrators-on-a-card
- that go in a PC and negate the need for an external hub, but they
- cost about the same as a small hub.
- - Although you can do Telnet, FTP, RCP, RSH, REXEC, and LPR all with
- free software off the Internet between your PC and the UNIX box, you
- would probably need to shell out about 300.00 for software to
- make your PC an NFS client.
-
-
- Hope this helps,
-
