  23. 10BaseT uses an arrangement like this:

  33. Basically lots of computers all attached to a central hub via
  34. unshielded twisted pair (data-grade).

  36. If you're looking for a cheap way to attach two computers, you can't
  37. beat 10Base2, otherwise known as thinnet or thin Ethernet.  It's like
  38. this:

  43. Assuming you need to just telnet and ftp to the Unix box from the PC,
  44. thinnet is a whole lot cheaper and easier for just a couple of nodes.  If
  45. the nodes are going to be many rooms apart and in greater number, then you 
  46. may want to take the plunge into 10BaseT.

  48. The approximate cost with 10Base2 between your PC and UNIX box,
  49. assuming the UNIX box already has software and an AUI Ethernet
  50. interface:

  52. transceiver for UNIX box to attach to thinnet -> 150.00
  53. AUI cable for use with transceiver ------------>  40.00
  54. Ethernet card for PC --------------------------> 150.00
  55. Telnet/FTP/etc... for PC ----------------------> free (many p.d. ver. avail.)
  56. Cable, connectors ----------------------------->  75.00
  57.                 TOTAL? ===========>> 415.00

  59. The approx. cost with 10BaseT between your PC and UNIX box, also assuming
  60. the UNIX box already has software and an AUI Ethernet interface:

  67. Cheap 12-port 10BaseT concentrator (HUB)-------> 300.00

  70. Notes:
  71.   - Actually, there's probably some cheaper 4 or 5 port concentrators
  72.     available for a bit less than 300.
  73.   - Some vendors are coming out with 4 or 5 port concentrators-on-a-card
  74.     that go in a PC and negate the need for an external hub, but they
  75.     cost about the same as a small hub.
  76.   - Although you can do Telnet, FTP, RCP, RSH, REXEC, and LPR all with 
  77.     free software off the Internet between your PC and the UNIX box, you
  78.     would probably need to shell out about 300.00 for software to 
  79.     make your PC an NFS client.
