- Errr...since you replied to my article I'll take a bite and say
- "I don't know". But your question is similar to asking "what is it
- about Ethernet that needs to know about the next protocol layer up?",
- and the answer is "nothing, really". True, AALs all operate over the
- same sorts of cell based virtual connections - "the network".

- However in many peoples eyes "the network" starts at the top of their
- AALs, providing the services required. So since CCITT B-ISDN is all
- about providing a variety of services, Study Group XVIII have been
- defining AALs as well as the underlying ATM structure.
