  25. Errr...since you replied to my article I'll take a bite and say
  26. "I don't know". But your question is similar to asking "what is it
  27. about Ethernet that needs to know about the next protocol layer up?",
  28. and the answer is "nothing, really". True, AALs all operate over the
  29. same sorts of cell based virtual connections - "the network".

  31. However in many peoples eyes "the network" starts at the top of their
  32. AALs, providing the services required. So since CCITT B-ISDN is all
  33. about providing a variety of services, Study Group XVIII have been
  34. defining AALs as well as the underlying ATM structure.
