- I need help on DAL (Database Access Language) client software for Windows 3.1.
-
- We have a DAL server software on our VAX/VMS system. I have successfully
- accessed RDB databases on that system via DAL protocol from a Mac running
- MS-Excel v4 and also DataPrism under Mac System Software v7.
-
- Since a majority of our administrative staff (for whom we would like to
- develop DAL client applications) have PC+Win 3.1, I have to find a client
- package which enables me to do on a PC what I've already done on the Macs.
-
- DAL client software is included in the Mac OS, so one just needs a user
- interface (Excel/dataPrism), a network link (Appletalk or Ethertalk)
- and you're away.
-
- Can anyone advise me of software that does what I want? I gather that
- Blythe's Omnis 7+ for Windows does provide links to DAL servers, but comes
- at an appallingly high cost for a single license.
-
- Unless there's some cheaper software options, it would be cheaper and easier
- for us to sell off the PCs and buy Macintoshes through the
- University Consortium and get DAL access by default(!)
-
- Other information: most PCs are running DOS 5, Windows 3.1, networked via
- Novell 3.11 over an ethernet which is also linked to the VAX. (I am hoping
- that DAL client software will be smart enough not to need Digital's
- Pathworks for DOS networking software, since we have by and large
- left it in favour of the faster and smaller Novell software)
-
- Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer!
