  19. We have released a new version (0.5) of the GNU font utilities.
  20.  
  21. The major news in this release is that we have written Texinfo
  22. documentation for the programs.  All reported bugs and configuration
  23. difficulties have been fixed, as far as we know.
  24.  
  25. To compile these programs, you will need GCC and GNU Make.  For the
  26. programs which do online graphics, you will also need an X11 server and
  27. the X11R4 or R5 libraries.

  49. Foundation (thereby supporting the GNU project); send mail to

  54. Here is a brief description of the programs included:

  56. * imageto extracts a bitmap font from an image in PBM or IMG format, or
  57.   converts the image to Encapsulated PostScript.
  58.  
  59. * xbfe is a hand-editor for bitmap fonts which runs under X11.
  60.  
  61. * charspace adds side bearings to a bitmap font.
  62.  
  63. * limn fits outlines to bitmap characters.
  64.  
  65. * bzrto converts a generic outline font to Metafont or PostScript.
  66.  
  67. * gsrenderfont renders a PostScript outline font at a particular point
  68.   size and resolution, yielding a bitmap font.
  69.  
  70. * fontconvert can rearrange or delete characters in a bitmap font,
  71.   filter them, split them into pieces, combine them, etc., etc.

  73. * imgrotate rotates or flips an IMG file.

  76. We need volunteers to help create fonts for the GNU project.  You do not
  77. need to be an expert type designer to help, but you do need to know
  78. enough about TeX and/or PostScript to be able to install and test new
  79. fonts.  Example: if you know neither (1) the purpose of TeX utility
  80. program `gftopk' nor (2) what the PostScript `scalefont' command does,
  81. you probably need more experience before you can help.

  83. If you can volunteer, the first step is to compile the font utilities.
  84. After that, contact me (karl@gnu.ai.mit.edu).  I will get you a scanned
  85. type specimen image.  The manual explains how to use these utilities to
  86. turn that into a font you can use in TeX or PostScript.
