  20. It's official!  A couple days ago, I received a message from my ex-manager,
  21. Fred Swartz.  He ended up at Merit/Michnet, which is a network made up of
  22. Michigan's universities and colleges.  They are going to support the archives
  23. here at the University of Michigan!  All of the letters of support that you
  24. folks sent helped the administration realize how important this service
  25. is to not only the U-M campus, but the Internet world as well.
  26.  
  27. Nothing will be "going away", as far as our archives are concerned.  Services
  28. will most likely be >added<, such as Gopher, and we already have WAIS
  29. service, and hopefully maybe a new machine or two.  "Support" means they
  30. will be paying for the disk space on our AFS file servers.  You can reach
  31. the archives right now in /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive/mac.

  33. I'll let you folks know more as I find it out myself.  There is supposed to
  34. be a large article being written about the archives in the Newsletter here
  35. on campus.  Around that time, I'll let you know what address you can 
  36. send e-mail to obtain a copy.  We got the bill for our DEC, which is the
  37. usual ftp machine that has been out in the shop for about a month now.  So I
  38. would be expecing the DEC back some time very soon now.  When that happens
  39. the "dir" and "ls -l" problems will magically go away.
  40.  
  41. Here are the files that we've added in the past week or so.... I'll be out
  42. in Cupertino/the Bay Area again starting Saturday and going through 
  43. Thursday.  But if you run into any problems, "comments@mac.archive.umich.edu"
  44. is an address you can send e-mail to for help.  Try to keep our archivists
  45. busy as well, you can ftp new files into the "incoming" directory anytime, 
  46. 24 hours a day.
