  19. Supposing this is true, there could be a number of reasons for it:

  21.     1. AI researchers are dishonest charlatans.

  23.     2. The funding agencies have ridiculous goals, and the
  24.     researchers are trying to get some decent work done despite
  25.     this.

  27.     3. The AI funding agencies operate much sloppier controls on how
  28.     their money gets spent than do physics etc.

  30. Charlatanry seems to follow big money, and if you're motivated by big
  31. money and research empire building then AI is not at the moment a
  32. fruitful field. For example, I'd expect genetic engineering and AIDS
  33. research to be more attractive to charlatans. I can't think of a reason
  34. why the AI funding agencies should be sloppier. The funding agencies
  35. operate general policies, and their staff move around.  So, if you
  36. allegation is true, I would suspect 2. above. Which seems quite a good
  37. reason to be dishonest. Remember von Braun being dishonest with Hitler
  38. about his wonderful new V2 missile? It was a dreadful missile, cost a
  39. fortune to develop and to make, and buried itself so deep in the ground
  40. before exploding that it did very little damage. Being supersonic and
  41. coming straight down it didn't even terrify people the way the V1
  42. ("buzzbomb") did. But it made a _lovely_ spaceship!
