  9. Subject:      VMBACKUP & 3490 Problem.

  12. We are evaluating an IBM 3490E C22 cartridge unit, but some problem
  13. arise when using VMBACKUP at level 5.3A.
  14. Our configuration is as follow :
  15.   VM/SP Release 5.0 at put 9002
  16.   IBM 4341-2
  17.   3490E channel attached to the 4341 in a 2 Mbps channel
  18. The 3490 is defined as a 3480 unit to VM without any feature.

  20. The problem is :

  22.   When VmBackup is ready to go to next cartirdge in an full backup job
  23. (not a physical one) we get an unrecoverable I/O error with message
  24. VMBTMP540E UNRECOVERABLE ERROR OCCURRED WRITING A DATA BLOCK
  25. and the the unit is detached.

  27. The EREP report indicate a fault symptom code 4411 and the description of it
  28. is as follow : A Read Backward command has been issued for a record in 3490E
  29. Extended Format. A unit Check, which impacts performance, is given the first
  30. time a Read Backward command is issued. The Unit Check is only given once per
  31. tape mount.

  33. The questions are :
  34.  Does somebody else experimented this symptom before ?
  35.  Is the IDRC feature involved in this ? It must be active or inactive in the
  36.  unit ?
  37.  Can it be a VMBACKUP release level problem ?
  38.  What is record in 3490E Extended Format ?
