- Mike,
-
- I don't know if DIRECT INFO can be reached directly from BITNET but
- you can get to it from the IBMMAIL gateway. You need to have a valid
- IBMMAIL address (your SE can help you get this set up) and then you
- can contact SCI for the IBMMAIL address of their server. SCI has a
- dippy sort of macro interface that they send you and from then on you
- use that to compose or insert the stuff you want to send. It is very
- easy to request zaps through but can be a bit of a pain to use for
- other things, but you'll get used to it.
-
- I get my fixes this way and they show up right here on my VM id; no
- need to retype anything. I've also used this method for posting
- problem reports and providing them documentation on problems. When it
- comes to getting SCI console logs and the like, I find using DIRECT
- INFO over IBMMAIL/BITNET to be quicker than sending a fax if I count
- the time it takes to get the fax cover sheet off the PostScript
- printer, use the other printer to print what I want to send, and for
- me to walk to the other wing of our complex where the stupid fax
- machine is now located! Using DIRECT INFO cuts all this down to 3-5
- minutes of cut-and-paste XEDITing and gets it right to the support
- person's terminal in no more than 5-10 minutes, depending on the
- network load.
