- We are experiencing the same problem in BOBthe elementary school
- where I teach. I have felt strongly about the need to teach
- keyboarding as early as third grade and do so using the MECC
- programm Communikeys. I also use a more in depth program in a
- summer school class that I teach called PAWS. I think it is
- published by Micro Grams.
-
- Many problems exist in the teaching of keyboarding. Two of the
- biggest are: 1)scheduling the lab to all classes for the
- needed dailey practice, and 2) getting teachers to teach
- keyboarding that don't type themselves. We do not have a
- computer lab teacher.
-
- One way we attempt to address the scheduling of practice
- sessions is to purchace a class set of Type Right machines.
- They are battery opperated keyboard consoles that simmulate a
- computer keyboard exactly. They provide multi-level lessons,
- practice sessions and games and they fit easily on a student's
- desk. They even come with a book much like a typing textbook.
-
- If you are interested in reading about the State Dept. of
- Educations position on keyboarding, you can request a copy of
- their position paper published several years ago.
