- I seemed to have spawned an argument over Coherent.
-
- Here's my situation. I was thinking about doing a BBS that would allow users
- to access a database. After researching different BBS software for DOS I
- discovered that this would require multiple machines and a network. It's
- possible to have multiple users under DOS dial in with Desqview, but running a
- separate program requires a door to a networked machine. Or so it appears from
- my research.
-
- My friend just bought Coherent which promises to be multiuser and multitasking.
- I really know very little about UNIX, but I thought it might be the solution to
- my problem. I would like to run one machine that allow 1-2 users on line at
- once, and those users should be able to run a separate database program. I
- would also like to be able to scale up the use if my project works out.
-
- I really don't have enough experience to consider UNIX. I know that there is a
- whole world out there of UNIX users, and software that is low cost or free, but
- all I see are the high priced UNIX OSes and software. I've read that an Intel
- box can support 8-16 terminals under UNIX and run multiuser software. I
- figured this might be a good alternative to DOS based BBS.
-
- Someone has e-mailed a suggestion I might try Limux (sp?). Is there a
- newsgroup, FAQ or ftp site I might find further information about all of this
- stuff?
