- handguns are designed to STOP, not to kill. The distinction is kind of
- subtle, though, since a handgun stops in a manner that is quite likely to
- cause death; nevertheless, stopping the attacker is the object, killing
- him is not. The attacker's state of health after the fact is largely
- irrelavent.

- Agreed. The only ethiical use of deadly force, and I certainly won't
- argue that handguns are not deadly force, is in the gravest extreme, when
- you have every reason to believe that the alternative is your own death.
- But I contend that, given such a situation, it is reasonable to use deadly
- force, and furthermore, that it is reasonable to be prepared in advance
- for such a situation, in the fervent hope that it will never happen. By
- prepared, I mean both mentally (willing to defend oneself) and physically
- (having the means to defend oneself at hand.)
