  25. If one drives south of Des Moines on I-35, roughly 5 miles south of
  26. town one finds a sign by the side of the road:

  31. One exits the interstate, and finds oneself on a county road (paved, but 
  32. just barely).  There are occasional helpful signs to inform our weary
  33. traveler that, yes, this *is* the road to the John Wayne Birthsite.

  35. Turns out that John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa, in a little white
  36. house on the east side of town.  Scores of motor homes make this fateful
  37. sixty mile roundtrip diversion daily, to have the pleasure of witnessing
  38. that lovely little white house in Winterset.
  39.  
  40. For some reason, it pleases me to know that some French tourists fell for 
  41. the JWB ploy, and spent all of their dollars in the process.
