- The difference between the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link
- and the Usenet is that the WELL people aren't certain that
- "bozo filters" are a good idea. What if someone who doesn't
- have something to contribute in one group has good things
- to say in another? they ask. On Usenet, the only question
- is whether it's more efficient to put people in global killfiles,
- or to kill crossposts, or to kill by hand.
-
- On the WELL, groups are like clumps of people talking at a party.
- You can feel free to make remarks as they come to mind, knowing
- that they'll be received enthusiastically. People might
- disagree, but they'll be polite about it.
-
- On Usenet, you have to package your idea in barbed wire. Once
- you make it public, you must be prepared to defend it. Somebody
- is going to jump on your head for it, guaranteed.
-
- I'm not sure which one I like better. There's nothing like
- talk.bizarre on the WELL. There are a lot of Deadheads on the
- WELL, and fewer computer weenies. This is sometimes fun, and
- sometimes frustrating.
