  25. Actually, it is at least as often a case of the extremist rank-and-file
  26. Republicans' driving moderate-at-heart leaders into hard right positions.
  27. This is certainly what happened to Bush on abortion and any number of other
  28. issues.  The reason Buchanan's speech went over as boffo is that so many
  29. of the party faithful secretly share his spiteful, intolerant, quasi-fascist
  30. sentiments.

  32. Don't let the fact that many party regulars are split over abortion fool
  33. you into thinking there are a lot of warm-hearted Republicans floating
  34. around out there.  It's just that they tend to draw the line on
  35. government-inforced morality right where it begins to affect *them*.
  36. In other words, mandatory life sentences for drug offenders are okay
  37. with them because they can't see Biff getting busted for dealing (he probably
  38. wouldn't need the money, after all);  but Muffy could very well end up
  39. needing an abortion, so they want to try to reserve that right for themselves.
