- Actually, it is at least as often a case of the extremist rank-and-file
- Republicans' driving moderate-at-heart leaders into hard right positions.
- This is certainly what happened to Bush on abortion and any number of other
- issues. The reason Buchanan's speech went over as boffo is that so many
- of the party faithful secretly share his spiteful, intolerant, quasi-fascist
- sentiments.

- Don't let the fact that many party regulars are split over abortion fool
- you into thinking there are a lot of warm-hearted Republicans floating
- around out there. It's just that they tend to draw the line on
- government-inforced morality right where it begins to affect *them*.
- In other words, mandatory life sentences for drug offenders are okay
- with them because they can't see Biff getting busted for dealing (he probably
- wouldn't need the money, after all); but Muffy could very well end up
- needing an abortion, so they want to try to reserve that right for themselves.
- It's just another form of selfishness.
