  37. More to the point, can you trust a *lame duck* Bush?

  39. It should be clear that Bush will support the "pro-life" position when
  40. he needs help from "pro-lifers" to advance the Bush political career.
  41. What happens when Bush no longer needs the "pro-lifers" in a lame
  42. duck second term?

  44. Lou Harris (the pollster) said in a recent speech that George
  45. Bush's mother has been a member of Planned Parenthood in CT
  46. for over 25 years.  This is the first I've heard this.  Given
  47. that Harris is fairly reputable and the speech was on NPR (at
  48. the National Press Club, which also means it was probably on
  49. C-SPAN), I suspect it is true.

  51. This lead me to think.  We all know about Bush flip-flop
  52. on abortion in 1980 (when picked as Reagan's VP).  We've 
  53. heard the stories that Bush was already planning to raise 
  54. taxes in 1988 when he said "Read My Lips".  We know that 
  55. Bush has never a "true believer" in the Far Right.  We know
  56. know the rumours that Barbara Bush is pro-choice (When
  57. asked specificly about this roumour by Baba Walters, Barbara 
  58. gave a vauge answer about not always agreeing with George's 
  59. positions).  We even know that one of Bush Supreme Court 
  60. appointees voted to uphold Roe-v-Wade.  (Bush was somewhat 
  61. stuck with Clarence Thomas in that he needed a black nominee
  62. (for political reasons) and the Right had been grooming Thomas
  63. for Marshall's spot).  We know that, if re-elected, will be a 
  64. "lame duck" (not have to worry about running for re-election).

  66. Which leads me to wonder if George, in his second term, will 
  67. do another flip-flop on abortion.  He won't have to worry
  68. about keeping the right wing happy.  He'll be free to do
  69. what he really believes.
