  43.                    THE SPATIAL DATABASE SYMPOSIUM

  45. SSD'93 is the third of the Symposia on Large Spatial Database Symposium
  46. series.  As with the previous conferences in Santa Barbara (1989) and
  47. Zurich (1991), it will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to
  48. report advances and to exchange information on topics concerned with
  49. database theory and advanced applications in such areas as Geographic
  50. Information Systems, CAD/CAM and AM/FM.

  55. Submissions of papers presenting original research on spatial data
  56. management are invited.
  57.  
  58. Topics of special relevance to the symposium include:
  59.         * spatial data models and structures
  60.         * spatial access methods
  61.         * spatial query processing and transaction management
  62.         * semantics of spatial databases
  63.         * data representations and mapping between representations
  64.         * user interfaces and languages
  65.         * heterogeneous spatial databases
  66.         * federated and interoperable spatial database management systems
  67.  
  68. The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag (Germany) in the
  69. Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series.
  70. Proposals for tutorials and panels are also invited and should be
  71. submitted to the respective Chairs.

  77. Please submit five copies of your paper to your nearest Programme Committee
  78. Co-chairs by 15th November 1992.  Manuscripts should be in English and not

  202.   Tentative topic:  Object-oriented spatial database systems.
  203.   Dr. Won Kim received B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from MIT, and
  204.   Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He
  205.   joined MCC in 1984 and was Director of the Object-Oriented and
  206.   Distributed System Laboratory.  He was the chief architect of the
  207.   ORION OODB system.  Prior to joining MCC,  he was a research staff at
  208.   IBM Almaden Research Center for four years.  He is currently President
  209.   of Unisql Inc.,  Austin, Texas.  He has co-edited two books: Query
  210.   processing in  database systems (Springer-Verlag), and Object-oriented
  211.   concepts,  databases and applications (Addison-Wesley), and co-authored
  212.   a book, Introduction to Object-Oriented Databases (MIT Press).

  215.   Tentative topic: Interoperable spatial database systems
  216.   Prof. Schek received M.Sc. degree in mathematics and Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing)
  217.   in civil engineering from University of Stuttgart,  West Germany, in
  218.   1968 and 1972, respectively.  He is currently a Computer Science
  219.   Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich,
  220.   Switzerland,  where he is the head of the Database Research Group and
  221.   responsible for database education.  He is also the head of the Institute
  222.   of Information Systems at ETH.  From 1983 to 1988, he was a Computer
  223.   Science Professor at the Technical University of Darmstardt,  West
  224.   Germany,  where he was responsible for database research and education,
  225.   particularly, for the DASDBS database system.

  231.                             SYMPOSIUM  VENUE

  233. The symposium will be held in Singapore, 13 hours flying-time from Europe
  234. and the West Coast of the United States and 19 hours from the East Coast.
  235. Singapore, a multi-racial nation, is an exciting city blending many
  236. cultures and offering excellent food, duty-free shopping and accommodation.
  237. The diversified culture provides a glimpse of the many Asian life styles
  238. in South East Asia.  Singapore has a tropical climate with a temperature
