  14. To the best of my knowledge, the flag on the Orbiter
  15. fuselage is painted to appear as though blown out straight
  16. by the passage of the vehicle through the air.  I believe
  17. it may have had its origins in the practices of the 
  18. Navies of yore, but I don't know what the Army/Air Force
  19. did to this custom.
