  23. However, being the computer geek that I am, I have to ask
  24. the obvious question - when is the electronic version
  25. going to become available, and should it not cost less
  26. than $25?  If it does not, then maybe something is wrong with
  27. Eric's (and Ted Nelson, and everyone else's) predictions
  28. about hypertext.  Even AMIX charges between $1 to $500
  29. per document, there is a $50 setup fee (not applicable
  30. in a bookstore or library), not to mention the $5-10 monthly
  31. fee (whether or not you use it) and the $3-8 hourly connect rate
  32. (plus telephone costs and the whole overhead costs of
  33. buying and owning a computer.  Boy, the more I think about it,
  34. the more depressed I get.  I am not a business type whatsoever,
  35. nor a lawyer, but I think they might have a better idea
  36. of what an electronic version of Nanosystems should cost
  37. in order to be competetive with a book.
  38. I guess its hard to put a value-added dollar price on 
  39. being able to grep through a book, but we do have a pretty
  40. good idea of the MIPS/$ and RAM/$ curves, so that might
  41. help decide when hypertext is really going to take off
  42. (though I have no idea how much the social hysterisis
  43. will slow things down at the beginning).
