- What you really need (IMHO) is a device which lets only one phone use the
- phone line, yet rings all telephones when someone is calling you. If someone
- picks up another phone when you are calling, he (she)'ll hear nothing.
- This is also useful when you use your modem and someone picks up the phone,
- resulting in hundredths of strange characters zapping over your screen.
-
- The little device I'm talking about exists to handle two phones on one line,
- but I also have seen extensions for multiple phones. It only contains some
- R's, C's a fet and 2 relays. However I don't have a schematic (I can draw one
- if you want) since you can buy them of the shelf for about $7 (here in Amsterdam)
-
-
- A similar exclusion device is widely available here : it should be in
- most phone stores or department stores. It's the same shape as a 2 line
- y-shaped RJ11 splitter, and goes for under $10 ( I think ). It's usually
- sold as a device to stop the answering machine when a phone is picked up.
-
- Inside it consists of just 2 zener diodes back-to-back. The model I opened
- up also had a couple of LED's, but that's optional. The idea is, home
- telephone wiring puts all phones in parallel. When the line is in use,
- DC voltage drops from 48V to about 10V or so. The "answering machine"
- outlet of the Y splitter connects to the wall through zeners,
- the "phone" outlet connects directly to the wall.
-
- To give the modem precedence over all phones, you'll need one of these
- for every outlet in the house. All phones plug into the "answering machine"
- outlet, and the modem plugs into the "phone" outlet. The modem will
- always over-ride voice calls then.
