- The intensity of the exercise determines to a large extent which fuels
- will be utilized first. Carbos aren't necesarily the primary source
- of fuel. High intensity, above the lactate (anaerobic)
- threshold exercise will tend to draw on glycogen reserves. Lactic acid
- is a product of carbohydrate metabolism, not a result of carbo depletion.
- At easier exercise levels, fats will be used to a greater degree,
- and carbohydrate is a lesser source of fuel.
-
- I believe that caffeine has indeed been shown to increase mobilization of
- fatty acids, allowing the body to utilize fats even at higher exercise
- intensities, and sparing glycogen stores. However, caffeine has a
- few drawbacks:
- - it's illegal in large quantities
- - the body builds up a tolerance, requiring larger doses
- - it functions as a diuretic, causing dehydration
- - if you're not accustomed to caffeine intake, it can really
- play havoc with your digestive system (this one I'm intimately
- familiar with!)
