- I talked to the home THX rep at Lucasfilm some months ago trying to find
- out specific info so I could at least move in the direction of THX
- quality without spending mega-$$. Bottom line: Lucasfilm will not divulge
- any of the specifications or guidelines unless you are a licensed THX
- manufacturer.
-
- From the very few generalities I did get, I would conclude that you
- simply need reasonable-quality components (noise, distortion, dynamic
- range are key, but none require exotic designs), and a lot of
- experience setting up listening environments. The speaker orientation
- and placement, especially the surrounds, are critical.
-
- I think that if they were to publish the specs and guidelines,
- Lucasfilm's competitive advantage would disappear since they would
- probably be fairly simple and straightforward to meet. I don't believe
- there's any magic involved; just collective experience within Lucasfilm.
-
- Note that all the above is conjecture and opinion, but based on my
- own experience with audio design I think it's generally true.
