- Living in the NY area, I've tried shopping at the 6th Ave. store. Can
- you say sleazy, uninformed (or lying) sales droids? Can you say bait and
- switch? Can you say read the fine print in the ads VERY carefully? Can
- you say gray market (i. e., no manufacturer's warranty--just a repair
- by 6th Ave techies of unknown caliber). Can you say more unpleasant than
- any other shopping experience I've ever had?
-
- The one good thing about them is the prices they advertise. I don't think
- it will work for high end stereo, but I have used their ad to get another,
- more reputable, shop to give me a much better price on a high end Mitsubishi
- VCR (they actually matched the price without using the "cash only" clause
- in the 6th Avenue ad).
-
- As for J&R, I have dealt with them both in store and mail order several
- times over the years (cassette deck, 2 walkmen, 2 discmen, clock radio,
- answering machine, lots of small stuff) and I have no complaints. The on
- floor sales folks are reasonably helpful, although I would recommend that
- you know what you want in advance. Prices, particularly for sale items
- are good, but not as low as the sleaze places. For items in the $200-$300
- and lower range, you can save a few bucks by careful shopping and/or
- dealing with the sleaze places (like 6th Ave), but I've found that the
- prices at J&R are close enough that I sometimes just buy an item that
- is on sale without spending a lot of time and effort trying to get a better
- price. They don't always have everything in the catalog in stock, but they
- have always had any adveritsed specials that I wanted in stock. Overall,
- I've been very satisfied with J&R and would not hesitate to deal with
- them again, or recommend them to a friend.

- Unfortunately, I don't think J&R gets up to this end of the stereo
- market.
