- Dear Audio-crowd:
-
- I have decided to build my own pair of speakers. This is going to be my
- first time, so I decided to buy a kit. In this way I can experiment, but
- with some guidance, hoping not to be too far away from the "correct" (?)
- tweaking. I would like to get a very clear speaker, unfortunatelly in a
- budget. Here's where I am: I got in touch with a very friendly and
- knowledgable guy in the net, who gave me many basic guidances, told me
- about books and papers, and a little bit about drivers.
-
- I've looked at the following kits (not in order of preference
- necessarily),
- and I would greatly appreciate any advise for the final decision on
- which
- one to buy:
-
- (all prices without cabinets, except 4))
-
- 1) D'APPOLITO 717 SIGNATURE SPEAKER
-
- Woofer: Scan Speak 18W8544 Kevlar (2)
- Tweeter: Scan Speak D2905
- network: 4th order Linkwitz-Riley at 2200 Hz
- Price: $560
-
- I was warned about Kevlar break up, but since this crossover is at a
- very
- low frequency, I thought it may not be a problem. The ad says it has
- very
- clerar midrange. (This kit is a little bit expensive for me, but I might
- get
- there).
-
- 2) Davis MV7
-
- Woofer: 20MC8A
- Tweeter: TW26T
- Mid: 13KLV5MA
- Crossover filter: 6/6/12/12 dB slopes, 500/4500 Hz
- Price: $415
-
- 3) Gemini
-
- Woofer: 15W758 (2)
- Tweeter: D260
- Crossover: ?
- Price: $662
-
- The people at Madisound told me that this kit is great. Looking at the
- tweeter curves, the D260 seems to have a big attenuation away from the
- axis starting at less than 10 Khz. It seems to me that if you don't
- listen to
- your system always from the same sofa you could get in trouble.
-
- 4) Phoenix
-
- Madisound 10208 woofer
- Peerless 1615 mid
- Vifa D20TD05
- frequency range: 35 - 20K +-2dB
- crossover: 18 db, impedance compensated
- $ 600 with cabinets.
-
- 5) The Twinn
-
- It has 2 woofers and a tweeter in a D'Appolito configuration.
- Woofer: 17W75 (2 of them)
- Tweeter: D-28 AF
- $500
-
- Thanks in advance for any comments.
