  29.    Queensbridge Houses Tenants Say "HUD Has Covered Up Long Enough"

  33. On Wednesday August 12, 1992 the Queensbridge Tenant Association held
  34. a protest rally at the NYC office of the scandal plagued US
  35. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The hilite was the
  36. enthusiasm showed by bystanders when the Queensbridge Houses tenants
  37. chanted "HUD has covered up long enough". This enthusiasm was shared
  38. by tenants leaders of other Public Housing Projects throughout the
  39. city as well as HUD employees, who watched from the sidelines.

  41. Queensbridge tenants have been charging that NYC HUD Head, Doctor
  42. Villane and HUD Engineers have been covering-up for organized crime
  43. contractors and as well as for a HUD sanctioned NYC HA protection
  44. racket. The protection racket is the NYC HA Tenant Patrol
  45. Organization which has done absolutely nothing to eradicate drug
  46. dealing from the projects but which gets HUD money and HUD sanction.
  47. Tenant Patrol only benefits NYC HA big-wigs who get big salaries out
  48. of this scam.

  50. Two days after the Queensbridge Houses protest, HUD employees charged
  51. that Jack Kemp, Secretary of HUD had been mismanaging the HUD budget.
  52. The Law Offices of Passman & Kaplan (202-659-2537) held a press
  53. conference to expose HUD mismanagement. Queensbridge Houses tenants
  54. say that HUD looks the other way at allegations of shoddy workmanship
  55. of organized crime connected contractors.

  57. While some would portray Jack Kemp as an early contender for the 1996
  58. GOP presidential nomination along with former anti-drug director Bill
  59. Bennett, Queensbridge tenants say that these two guys must be taking
  60. part in a gross charade. Jack Kemp can't properly supervise one
  61. Federal agency and Bennett might as well be a "drug king pin" for all
  62. the good that he has done. In a combo public housing and drug
  63. incident, Queensbridge children were recently chased away from a
  64. Police Athletic League playground by gun totting drug dealers. Police
  65. have not shown up yet!

  67. Queensbridge Houses is the largest public housing project in the USA
  68. and is a concentrated USA is its cross section of races, religions,
  69. economic and ethnic groups. Queensbridge Houses has many problems.
  70. Tenant leaders have been tipped off that Queensbridge Houses manager
  71. Scott Krikawa will not be returning to Queensbridge Houses from his
  72. vacation but instead may be heading for the unemployment office.

  74. The Queensbridge/Fruit of Islam controversy which has already been
  75. covered in the NY Daily News, NY Times, Newsday and various broadcast
  76. media, is heading for the courts in September. The ADL has apparently
  77. unduly influenced Jack Kemp to disallow the Fruit of Islam from
  78. providing security at Queensbridge Houses. The ADL has meddled in NYC
  79. HA affairs by opposing Fruit of Islam desired participation at
  80. Queensbridge Houses. In an on-the-air interview on WBAI on Tuesday
  81. August 18, 1992, Jewish tenant leader Violet Hamilton denounced the
  82. ADL. Hamilton stated that the FOI would be good for Queensbridge
  83. Houses. Hamilton stated that the "Tenant Patrol is doing nothing."
  84. The name Violet Hamilton may ring a bell. Early this year, she was in
  85. the news as the victim of attempted blackmail by NYC Chair Laura
  86. Blackburne.

  88. Pending September litigation, the Queensbridge Tenant Council has
  89. been tracking down through the computer networks as a contingency
  90. plan the National Black Rifleman's Association and A-AMAN (the
  91. African-American Men Against Narcotics.) These groups have prior
  92. experience in patrolling housing projects while being armed with
  93. rifles.
