  18. Hi Chuck!  I agree that the article balanced positive as well as
  19. negative observations and that some significant questionable practices
  20. were not covered.  One that comes to my mind is the link between the
  21. American Brotherhood for the Blind and the National Federation of the
  22. Blind.  Jernigan routinely uses money raised through charibable
  23. solicitations for the "services to the blind" of the Brotherhood toward
  24. financing political activities of his in the Federation.  For example,
  25. if someone doesn't win a scholarship through the regular NFB
  26. scholarship process, but the person is being politically cultivated by
  27. Jernigan for some reason, then he will give them a scholarship through
  28. the Brotherhood.  Brotherhood money is also used sometimes to finance
  29. the "re-organizing" of state affiliates so the the hotel and air
  30. expenses don't appear on the NFB's books.  In literature of the
  31. Brotherhood, this is referred to as "helping blind persons
  32. self-organize" or some similar phrase.  In this way, Jernigan can help
  33. to ensure that only people loyal to him without question get elected
  34. state presidents in the organization.

  36. Ypu're right that an investigative exposee usually involves more than
  37. what was revealed in "Blind Loyalty."  In comparison to what mainstream
  38. press is usually willing to report about a disability organization,
  39. however, I think it was an exposee.

  45. P.S.  The American Brotherhood for the Blind has recently been renamed
  46. to the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults.  If that
  47. were its sole focus, it is a positive name change--gender- neutral,
  48.  
  49. etc.  Unfortunately, with what I know about its additional hidden
  50. purposes, I cannot help but wonder if it an attempt to strenghthen the
  51. perception of its charitable role over a different reality.

  53. PPS:  For the information of anyone listening who does not know,
  54. Kenneth Jernigan is Executive Director of both the Brotherhood and the
  55. Federation;  Marc Maurer is President of the Federation and General
  56. Counsel to the Brotherhood.  Marc Maurer's salary is paid by the
  57. Brotherhood for "legal services."  Jernigan's salary has been paid by
  58. the Brotherhood, though he says he has been unpaid in recent years.
