  26. At the request of CODEHUCA, member of our network, we call on you to
  27. intervene URGENTLY on behalf of the following situation in Guatemala.
  28. Brief description of the situation:
  29. Messrs. Nicolas GUTIERREZ CRUZ and Eliseo SUCHITE, former soldiers of
  30. indigenous origin, were recently condemned to death (the latter was
  31. condemned in absentia) for the murder of four peasants including a
  32. minor aged 11 years, committed on January 1992 in, Guatemala city.
  33. According to the information received, Mr. GUTIERREZ CRUZ's
  34. execution, which was foreseen for 18 August, was suspended following
  35. and appeal made on his behalf to the Supreme Court.
  36. CODEHUCA draws attention to the fact that the sentences meted out to
  37. these former soldiers of indigenous extraction contradicts with the
  38. recent acquittal of 6 high ranking soldiers accused of the murder of
  39. 11 people in August 1991.
  40. CODEHUCA believes that there is reason to suspect that the probable
  41. execution of Mr. GUTIERREZ CRUZ is intended to mask the
  42. responsibility of the military officers who ordered the massacre.
  43. Action requested:
  44. Please write to the Guatemalan authorities immediately to demand that
  45. they take all the necessary measures to prevent the execution of Mr.
  46. GUTIERREZ CRUZ and to commute his death sentence to a prison
  47. sentence.
