- PITTSBURGH, Aug. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American Federation of
- Teachers threatened today to boycott Ikea, the chain of home
- furnishings stores, if it did not withdraw an advertisement the AFT
- says misrepresents student test scores in California.
- The vote occurred under a special order of business at the AFT's
- national convention being held here.
- The advertisement, which appeared in California newspapers in
- early August, was headlined, "California hasn't seen figures this low
- since last year's SATs." The advertisement promoted Ikea's desks,
- lamps and other furnishings for use by students at prices the company
- said "are sure to work with any education budget."
- Helen Bernstein, president of the United Teachers of Los Angeles,
- called the advertisement "one of the worst examples of
- teacher-bashing I've ever seen. We must condemn this type of action."
- The Los Angeles AFT affiliate specifically objected to the
- reference to Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and said, "In
- California, scores went up. The ad is not even truthful. The
- company is engaging in the No. 2 national pastime -- teacher bashing."
- "If the company refuses to withdraw the advertisement, then every
- teacher should refuse to shop at Ikea," Bernstein told the nearly
- 4,000 delegates in attendance.
- The AFT's special order accused Ikea of "misrepresenting student
- test scores in publicizing sale merchandise and of creating an ad
- that reinforces the myth of educational decline, undercuts public
- confidence in the schools and maligns teachers, students and public
- education."
- Additionally, the AFT said Ikea's advertisement is "particularly
- offensive" as California is in the midst of a severe fiscal crisis in
- the schools.
- The AFT said it would write a letter to Ikea officials outlining
- its objections to the advertisement and asking the store to withdraw
- it.
- The AFT, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, represents 796,000 teachers,
- paraprofessionals and school-related personnel, nurses and
- health-care workers, higher education faculty, and state and public
- employees.
