- LIBYAN STATEMENT RE UN SANCTIONS
-
- August 14
-
- Libya today expressed "deep regret" over the decision of the United Nations
- Security Council on Wednesday to continue air, arms and diplomatic sanctions
- against the country.
-
- In a statement, the Libyan Foreign Ministry said: "These unjust sanctions
- led to many tragedies inflicted upon the Libyan people from deaths of children,
- old people and women, a deterioration in the standard of living and a slowdown
- in the development process...It has led to the imprisonment of an entire
- population."
-
- The Foreign Ministry continued by expressing "its deep regret over this
- extension because Libya, despite its innocence, has agreed to cooperate to
- implement the (Security Council's) resolution and has taken several steps"
- in this direction.
-
- The statement concluded, "Libya will prove its innocence and will seek
- compensation for the losses and damages."

- BACKGROUND:
-
- To date, at least 40 people have died as a direct result of the air
- sanctions imposed on Libya. Of these, seventeen were women and children
- who perished because they could not be transported by air to trauma centers
- in Europe following an explosion near Tripoli on June 20.
-
- Shortly after the explosion, two of the surgeons who were caring for
- the injured reported that "some of the cases cannot be treated (in Libyan
- hospitals)...Families are asking for the transfer of their loved ones to
- hospitals outside Libya and some of them are pressing very much for that.
- But what can we do? They are the victims of (UN Security Council) Resolution
- 748."
-
- Libya attempted to evacuate the most severely injured by road to Tunisia
- or by sea to Malta, from where they could have been flown to hospitals in
- Europe. However, the seventeen, all suffering from extensive burns, were
- too ill to survive the long trip and they died either in the ambulances en
- route to Tunisia or on the sea-rescue boats taking them to Malta.
