- The U.S. and Soviet Union have quietly stopiled over 70,000
- tons of deadly chemical weapons. With the end of the Cold War,
- the two countries recently agreed to destroy most of these wea-
- pons. But how can these highly toxic chemical agents be des-
- troyed without causing harm to people or the environment?
- SCRAPPING CHEMICAL WEAPONS, from the AMERICA'S DEFENSE MONITOR
- Public Television series, looks at this unusual and challenging
- problem. There are 8 sites in the U.S. where chemical weapons
- were produced and will be destroyed, along with a site on the
- Jonston Atoll in the Pacific. Plans for incineration are causing
- great concern among nearby residents, who fear exposure to can-
- cer-causing agents. Military officials claim there is little
- chancew of any problem. Featured are Brig. General Walter
- Busbee, Head of Chemical Wapons Destruction, Sebia Hawkins,
- Greenpeace Pacific Coordinator, and Igor Khripunov, Soviet Em-
- bassy Official.

- America's most historic river, the Mississippi, has become a
- 2300 mile toxic waterway. Over half the industrial toxic waste
- discharged into our lakes and streams is dumped directly into the
- Mississippi. Cancer and mortality rates are among the highest in
- the nation along the chemical corridor stretching from Baton
- Rouge to New Orleans. Entire towns have been shuttered as the
- direct result of unchecked air and groundwater pollution. Mean-
- while, the debate rages between environmentalists and government
- officials over how dangerous the pollutants are and what regula-
- tions should be put in place or enforced. WE ALL LIVE DOWN-
- STREAM explores the problems and the stories of people who live
- along the river, many of whom are now fighting to save the Mighty
- Mississippi.

- TINKA'S PLANET is an entertaining introduction for elementary
- age children to the need for recycling. When Tinka discovers
- that not all trash needs to be thrown away, she begins to collect
- her family's cans, bottles, and newpapers. On her first visit to
- the local recycling center she learns how recycling can help
- preserve the environment. Inspired to do something more for the
- environment, she convinces other kids in the neighborhood to join
- her in a recycling campaign. Tinka's infectious energy eventual-
- ly persuades her mother and other adults to take part. TINKA'S
- PLANET is being used in over 300 elementary schools throughout
- Los Angeles.

- Every minute, over one million pounds of hazardous waste is
- produced by American industry--over 525 billion pounds a year.
- Rather than encouraging industry to produce less waste, the
- Environmental Protection Agency is forcing states to license
- and live with hazardous waste incinerators. THE RUSH TO BURN
- examines whether incineration is safe, whether the government
- is adequately regulating this process, and the alternatives
- to toxic burning. the film also tells the story of citizens
- >from many parts of the country who have discovered the dangers
- of these incinerators and are fighting to stop them.
-
- "An extremely important videotape...Provides graphic
- and moving testimony from citizens who live near
- hazardous waste incinerators and those fighting
- proposed incinerators."

- >VHS Sale $25.

- Is the Pentagon protecting us or poisoning us? The
- military uses and disposes of huge quantities of the most
- deadly substances known: nuclear wastes, nerve gas, and
- hundreds of toxic chemicals. Yet, the handling of these
- substances is often done secretly and without any civilian
- regulation or oversight. Improperly treated toxics threaten
- the security of our nation's vital resources. The full extent
- of the problem is only now becoming clear. Representatives
- Mike Synar (D-OK) and Richard Ray (D-GA), New York Times reporter
- Keith Schneider, and other environmental experts shed light on
- the military's soiled record. The military's handling of toxics
- affects many communities and is an issue which can no longer be
- "swept under the rug."

- This program gives simple and practical advice on how we
- can reduce pollution from households and protect our families
- >from the toxic hazards found in our homes. Taking a personal
- approach, the tape emphasizes safe use, proper disposal,
- recycling and reduction of the most common household toxics:
- motor oil, paints, strippers, pesticides, automotive products,
- and heavy-duty oven and drain cleaners. Highlights include
- community programs that collect and recycle or dispose of oil,
- pesticides and paint; a demonstration of simple ways to pre-
- vent poisoning and injury from the misuse of household chem-
- icals; and tips from professional housecleaners who use mild
- soaps and baking soda instead of more toxic and expensive
- cleaning products. This is an important, hands-on program for
- anyone concerned about the potential hazards posed by the
- chemicals we all use daily.
-
- "Professional and geared to the public. A wonderful

- Small businesses of all kinds--photo finishers, auto mechanics,
- dry cleaners and manufacturers--are making remarkable changes to
- protect our environment. CLEANING UP TOXICS IN BUSINESS shows how
- small businesses can use a variety of innovative solutions to comply
- with increasingly strict environmental regulations. Businesses, from
- a brass bed factory to a termite control service, are finding ways to
- stop pollution before it starts--substituting less hazardous mater-
- ials or techniques. Others, like neighborhood dry cleaners, are
- investing in new equipment that recaptures and reuses virtually all
- toxic chemicals in their shops. Often there is an unexpected and very
- welcome benefit: a more efficient oper- ation with greater
- profitability. This is a stimulating program of special interest to
- business owners and their customers, as well as public policy makers,
- regulatory agencies, and environmental studies.
-
- "An excellent introduction to pollution prevention
- techniques--a source of inspiration to get toxics
- under control in businesses. We're using this video
- for public education and outreach for our small and
- large industrial customers."

- Few Americans realize that the hazardous waste we generate
- here is one of our country's leading exports to thirdworld
- nations. GLOBAL DUMPING GROUND, a PBS Frontline special report,
- reveals how toxic exports have become big business--and a ser-
- ious health hazard to the citizens of foreign nations. Stricter
- regulations and higher disposal costs have made it more dif-
- ficult to dispose of toxic waste in this country. Since no US
- law prohibits exporting this deadly refuse, much of it is flow-
- ing at a lucrative profit to countries with few regulations.
- GLOBAL DUMPING GROUND travels to dump sites in several count-
- ries, and follows the trail of the notorious Colbert brothers,
- who shipped falsely labelled barrels to over a hundred count-
- ries. This is a hard-hitting, investigative documentary which
- raises important environmental and regulatory concerns.
