- Coast Guard Interdicts Haitian Refugees in San Francisco Bay
-
- Thirty-seven Haitian refugees and their supporters who sailed
- into San Francisco Bay on a Peace Navy boat to protest discriminatory
- immigration policy by the US government were intercepted and
- detained by the Coast Guard today for an hour and a half. Operating
- on orders from Washington, Coast Guard officials and two INS officials
- stopped the boat, ordering everyone to remain on board until they had
- checked their green cards and taken all their names. Haitians on board
- the intercepted boat were either U.S. citizens or refugees who were screened
- in by the INS this past March. The INS officials stated that they recieved
- orders early on the morning of the 12th to intercept the boat.
- As a welcoming ceremony in support of the refugees got underway
- on shore on the Embaracadero in downtown San Francisco, a Coast Guard
- helicopter hovered overhead drowning out speakers, among them San
- Francisco Supervisor Terrance Hallinan. "We are witnessing opression
- on this San Francisco Bay", said one speaker, the Rev. Lorenzo Carlisle
- of the Oakland Community Church of Christ, "What was meant to be a
- symbolic action has turned into a situation of terror and intimidation.
- So can you imagine what's happening off the shores of Florida."
- The stunned lunch hour crowd was treated to the same display of
- force the Coast Guard shows each time it sends back Haitian refugees
- fleeing their country's oppressive military rule.
-
- "This is an outrage." said David Rorick of the San Francisco
- Lawyers Committee for Urban Affairs "the irony of this is that while
- we were protesting the Bush Administration's policy toward Haitian
- refugees, the Coast Guard was carrying out this policy in front of our eyes,
- right here on the high seas of San Francisco Bay."
