- LAWMAKERS, LABOR, ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS RIP NAFTA
-
- As word spread that a NAFTA deal was imminent, U.S.
- lawmakers and labor, consumer safety and environmental
- groups criticized the free trade treaty.
-
- Senator Max Baucus (D-Montana) said the agreement should be
- reworked to strengthen "inadequate" environmental and labor
- safeguards. Citizens' groups criticized the secrecy of the
- negotiations and asked the Bush Administration to release the
- NAFTA text for closer scrutiny. "The environmental and health
- impacts could be enormous. We need the text to judge whether
- it meets the standards we have communicated to the
- Administration and Congress on these issues," said John Audley,
- trade analyst with the Sierra Club.
-
- Environmental Protection Agency Administrator William Reilly
- denied that NAFTA would endanger the environment, arguing
- that a failure to implement a treaty could be the
- "environmental mistake of the decade." Bush Administration
- officials contend the agreement includes clauses to help ensure
- industrial development without damaging the environment.
