- One of the most amasing things about METROrail is that it doesn't
- ALREADY run down the middle of the Dulles Access Highway. It seems so
- obvious a place to run Metro and would have been easy to do and to
- integrate in with the Orange Line through Falls Church.
-
- The Virginia Department of Full Employment for Paving Contractors
- (VDOT :-) should pay for the installation and maintenance of the rails
- and stations down the Dulles Access Corridor and let METRO take care
- of the trains. The reduced auto traffic would reduce VDOT's road
- maintenance costs and they would finally be doing their job -- solving
- TRANSPORTATION problems -- as distinguished from paving roads.
- Stops should be at least at Dulles, Reston Town Center (maybe 2 stops
- in Reston), Wolf Trap, and McLean/Tysons.
-
- The other stupid move is the HOV lane work on I-66 that is removing
- the median space that METRO will need to run out past Vienna to at
- least Fair Oaks. That extension is needed TODAY and there is lots of
- pent up commuter demand to justify extending it at least to Fair Oaks.
- Again, VDOT should pay for installing and maintaining the rails and
- stations and METRO should run the trains. Stops should be at each
- major road crossing of I-66 with a terminus at Fair Oaks. Look how
- far the Red Line goes to get to Shady Grove -- Virginia deserves at
- least that quality and depth of service.
